Learning Objectives

Indicator: B6.2.3.1.2 - Identify the unknown in a problem; represent the problem with an equation; and solve the problem concretely, pictorially or symbolically.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify the unknown quantity in a given word problem and state it clearly in their own words.
  2. Represent a word problem as a one-step equation using a letter (such as x) for the unknown.
  3. Solve one-step equations of the forms x + a = b, x - a = b, and ax = b using concrete objects, pictures, or symbols.
  4. Check their solution by substituting the value back into the original equation.
  5. Justify their chosen method (concrete, pictorial, or symbolic) and explain why their answer makes sense.
