Indicator: B4.2.2.1.1 - Write a given problem as an equation in which a symbol is used to represent an unknown number
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Identify the unknown number in a given word problem or number sentence.
- Explain that a box symbol, letter, or other symbol stands for a missing or unknown value.
- Write a given problem as an equation using a symbol (such as [], x, or n) for the unknown number.
- Justify their choice of equation by explaining what each part of the equation represents in the original problem.
- Check whether their equation correctly matches the problem by re-reading the problem and comparing it with the equation.
