Indicator: B6.4.1.1.1 - Compare renewable and non-renewable sources of energy

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Define energy and name at least three sources of energy from their immediate environment.
  2. Explain the difference between renewable and non-renewable sources of energy in their own words.
  3. Sort given sources of energy into renewable and non-renewable categories with at least 80% accuracy.
  4. Justify why a particular source of energy is classified as renewable or non-renewable.
  5. Work collaboratively in groups to present findings on energy sources using flashcards.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

- Begin by asking the following questions: (1) what is energy? (2) Where does energy come from? (answers to this question may include the sun, batteries, food, firewood and hydroelectric power and thermal plants)
- Show pictures and videos of different sources of energy such as the sun, batteries, food and water.
- Learners work in groups to identify sources of energy and sort them into sources that are not depleted when used (solar, wind and hydro sources) and those that are depleted after use (firewood, batteries, food, gasoline, diesel, kerosene, etc.).
- Learners present their responses on flashcards for a general discussion in class.
- Assist learners to build their vocabulary by introducing and explaining the terms, "renewable" and "non-renewable" sources of energy and give examples of such sources.
