Learning Objectives
Indicator: B4.4.1.1.1 - Identify the effect of heat on the change of state of substances
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Observe and describe what happens to water when it is heated and when it is cooled, using the correct terms (boiling, evaporation, condensation).
- Demonstrate that boiling water produces steam and that the amount of water decreases as it boils.
- Measure and record the quantity of water before and after boiling to show that heat causes water to change into vapour.
- Explain how steam or vapour can turn back into liquid water when it loses heat.
- Apply the concept of change of state to everyday substances such as shea butter and candle wax, predicting what will happen when they are heated or cooled.

- Guide learners through simple activities to identify effects of heat on substances (use liquids and solids, e.g. water, shea butter, candles, etc.). - Learners demonstrate evaporation by boiling water and discuss their experiences. Note: let learners measure the quantity of the water before and after boiling to show the effect of heat on water. - Elaborate on learners' ideas to explain how the escaping vapour can be changed into water (through the loss of heat).
