Learning Objectives

Indicator: B9.2.1.1.2 - Describe the activities in festivals celebrated in the three main religions in Ghana

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. List at least four preparatory activities that communities in Ghana undertake before celebrating religious festivals.
  2. Describe the main activities that take place during festivals in the three main religions: Christianity, Islam, and African Traditional Religion.
  3. Explain the purpose or meaning behind at least three specific festival activities, such as family reunion, exchange of gifts, and public worship.
  4. Dramatise the main activities of one festival, showing accurate details of preparation and celebration.
  5. Demonstrate respect for the festivals of all three religious traditions through their participation and discussion.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

1. Discuss the acts of preparation towards the celebration of festivals in Ghana.
2. List and explain the preparatory acts. They include ban on noise making, public appearance of religious leaders, organising cleaning up exercises and abstinence from sex.
3. Describe the main activities in the festivals. Some are:
• Family re-union
• Exchange of gifts and greetings
• Public worship, etc.
4. Dramatise the main activities that take place in one festival.
