Real Number System

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 1.1.1.LI.1 - Determine the properties of subsets (for two-set problems), their vocabulary and operations and use them to solve real-life problems.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Define and correctly use the vocabulary of sets: subset, proper subset, union, intersection, complement, universal set, and empty set, with at least 90% accuracy.
  2. Determine whether one set is a subset or proper subset of another, and write the relationship using the correct notation (A ⊆ B or A ⊂ B).
  3. Identify and shade the regions of a two-set Venn diagram representing union, intersection, and complements.
  4. Solve real-life problems involving two sets by drawing a Venn diagram, completing a two-set table, and interpreting the results.
  5. Explain the properties of set operations (commutative and distributive) using examples from everyday situations in Ghana, showing tolerance and respect for the views of group members during collaborative work.

Real Number System (1.1)
Content standard
1.1.1.CS.2 - Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of real number systems with respect to the concepts and vocabulary of sets, establish their relationships and carry out simple surveys using the properties of sets. 1.1.1.LO.2 Analyse and solve real world problems involving union, intersection and complements of sets and apply these to three sets of problems using simple surveys.
Indicator
1.1.1.LI.1 - Determine the properties of subsets (for two-set problems), their vocabulary and operations and use them to solve real-life problems.
Suggested placement
Semester 1, Week 3 (Week 3 of the year)

Our suggestion, laid out in curriculum order across three terms of twelve weeks. NaCCA does not fix the week, so follow your school's scheme of learning.

Building on What Others Say, Managing Talk for Learning, Structuring Talk for Learning, Diamond Nine; Group Work/Collaborative Learning.
In an interactive activity, review subsets, unions, intersections, and regions of two sets of Venn diagram and their properties of operations to investigate real life problems involving two sets. Employ differentiated assessment and ensure values such as tolerance, truth, honesty, respect for others' views, etc., among learners.
Example: Using build on what others say, investigate real-life problems where two sets can be employed to resolve them. Ensure tolerance, discipline and honesty.
Teaching and Learning Resources:
- * GeoGebra (free software) * video clips * cardboards
- * models * SHS Mathematics curriculum * Fractional boards
- * square or grid paper * multi-base blocks * algebraic tiles
Assessment (1.1.1.AS.1). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 3 Strategic reasoning.
