SHS1 Design And Communication Technology · Semester 2, Week 1

Plane Geometry

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 1.2.1.LI.1 - Explain types of plane geometrical figures and give examples.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Define plane geometry as the study of flat, two-dimensional shapes and distinguish plane figures from solid figures.
  2. Identify and name at least six types of plane geometrical figures, including triangles, quadrilaterals, and polygons.
  3. Classify triangles as equilateral, isosceles, or scalene based on their side properties.
  4. Classify quadrilaterals as square, rectangle, rhombus, trapezium, trapezoid, or parallelogram based on their properties.
  5. Give a real-world example of each plane figure found within the school environment or the local community and present their findings.

Content standard
1.2.1.CS.1 - 1.2.1.CS.1 Apply the concept of plane geometry in designing. 1.2.1.LO.1 Use knowledge of plane geometry to draw plane geometrical shapes and design different artefacts based on plane geometrical figures.
Indicator

Suggested placement
Semester 2, Week 1 (Week 21 of the year)

Our suggestion, laid out in curriculum order across three terms of twelve weeks. NaCCA does not fix the week, so follow your school's scheme of learning.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Talk for Learning/ Experiential learning/ collaborative learning:
1. With the aid of relevant pictures, cardboard charts and objects in the school environment, engage learners to brainstorm in whole class discussion to come out with the meaning of plane geometry.
2. Through mixed ability groups, assist learners to identify the various types of plane geometrical figures, give examples of each and explain their properties

Examples of plane figures are: Triangles - equilateral, isosceles and scalene Quadrilaterals - square, rectangle rhombus, trapezium, trapezoid and parallelogram Polygons- pentagon, hexagon, heptagon, octagon, nonagon and decagon Let each group give a presentation based on their work and provide a summary afterwards.

Assessment (1.2.1.AS.1). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 3 Strategic reasoning.
