SHS1 Design And Communication Technology · Semester 1, Week 13

Pattern Design

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 1.1.3.LI.3 - Use appropriate materials, tools and freehand drawing techniques to design and create 2-dimensional templates and patterns as interventions for challenges in the community.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify at least three appropriate tools and materials for creating 2-dimensional templates and patterns, and state the function of each.
  2. Demonstrate correct freehand drawing techniques, including steady line control, proportion and symmetry, while creating a pattern template.
  3. Design an original 2-dimensional template or pattern that responds to a specific challenge identified in their community.
  4. Create a finished template or pattern using appropriate materials and tools, following the general production processes studied in Week 12.
  5. Present and explain their finished template or pattern to the class, justifying how it addresses the chosen community challenge.

Pattern Design (1.3)
Content standard
1.1.3.CS.1 - 1.1.3.CS.1 Demonstrate knowledge and skill in the use of tools, materials and freehand drawing techniques to create templates and patterns as the basis for design in the community. 1.1.3.LO.1 Apply the understanding and skills of creating templates and patterns to develop freehand-drawn templates and patterns as solutions in the community.
Indicator
1.1.3.LI.3 - Use appropriate materials, tools and freehand drawing techniques to design and create 2-dimensional templates and patterns as interventions for challenges in the community.
Suggested placement
Semester 1, Week 13 (Week 13 of the year)

Our suggestion, laid out in curriculum order across three terms of twelve weeks. NaCCA does not fix the week, so follow your school's scheme of learning.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Problem-based learning/ Activity based learning: Learners in groups use appropriate tools, materials and techniques to imitate existing template and pattern designs.

Problem-based learning: Learners in mixed-ability groups identify challenges in the community that can be addressed using templates and patterns. Learners should be encouraged to look for simple but obvious challenges and problems in the community that 2-dimensional templates and patterns can address with little effort.

Project-based learning: Learners in groups use appropriate materials, tools and techniques to design and create 2-dimensional templates and patterns to address challenges in the community. Encourage learners to keep to the general processes for template and pattern production and plausible techniques close when working to facilitate easy reference and action.

Assessment (1.1.3.AS.3). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall; Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding; Level 3 Strategic reasoning; Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning.
