Learning Objectives

Indicator: 1.1.4.LI.8 - Identify the types of basic skills in basketball and apply them in a game of basketball (lay up in basketball).

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  • Describe the footwork pattern for both right-handed and left-handed lay-ups, stating which foot is used for the take-off step.
  • Demonstrate the correct grip, finger placement and release technique for a lay-up shot.
  • Explain how to use the square on the backboard as a target when performing a lay-up.
  • Execute a two-step lay-up with proper footwork, shooting technique and backboard aim during a modified basketball game.
  • Assess a partner’s lay-up performance using a simple checklist and give one piece of constructive feedback.

Pair/individual learning Footwork: Describe and demonstrate the footwork to learners. Guide learners to simulate the basic two-step approach (right-left for right-handed lay-ups, left-right for left-handed lay-ups). If physical demonstration is not be enough, use videos to aid the learning.
Shooting technique: Learners practice the proper grip, finger placement and release for a lay-up.
Use of backboard: Explain how to aim for the square on the backboard to guide the shot. Use physical markers to demonstrate the correct target.

Assessment (1.1.4.AS.8): Level 2: Describe how a lay-up is executed. Level 3: Demonstrate how a lay-up is executed.
