Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: B9.1.2.1.3 - Use the associative property of addition and multiplication.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. State the associative property of addition and multiplication in their own words.
  2. Verify that changing the grouping of three numbers in addition does not change the sum, using at least two numerical examples.
  3. Verify that changing the grouping of three numbers in multiplication does not change the product, using at least two numerical examples.
  4. Apply the associative property to simplify computations mentally, such as 8 + (12 + 25) or (4 × 15) × 5.
  5. Use the associative property to solve a word problem involving addition or multiplication in a real-life context.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

E.g1. Recognise that for any three numbers a, b and c;
i. a + (b + c) = (a + b) + c
or a + (b + c) = (a + c) + b i.e. 15 + (6 + 9) = (15 + 6) + 9 = 30
ii. (a × b) × c = a × (b × c) i.e. (12 × 5) × 4 = 12 × (5 × 4) = 240
