Learning Objectives

Indicator: B9.1.2.1.2

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. State the commutative property of addition in words and symbols, for any two numbers a and b.
  2. State the commutative property of multiplication in words and symbols, for any two numbers a and b.
  3. Verify the commutative property by computing both sides of a + b and b + a, and a × b and b × a, for given pairs of numbers.
  4. Use the commutative property to rearrange numbers mentally to make addition and multiplication easier to compute
  5. Determine whether subtraction and division also obey the commutative property, and give counterexamples showing that they do not.
