Learning Objectives

Indicator: B8.1.2.1.3 - Apply mental mathematics strategies to solve word problems.

  • Apply at least two mental strategies (breaking numbers apart, rounding and adjusting, working left to right, or using friendly numbers) to solve word problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Explain their mental process step by step in their own words to a partner or the class.
  • Solve a multi-step word problem using mental strategies, checking their answer by estimating first.
  • Create and solve their own simple word problem based on a familiar Ghanaian setting, and state which mental strategy they used.
