Number Operations

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: B7.1.2.2.1 - Add and subtract up to four-digit numbers.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Add up to four-digit whole numbers using the expanded form (partitioning) method, with correct regrouping where needed.
  2. Subtract up to four-digit whole numbers using the expanded form method, with correct borrowing where needed.
  3. Add decimal numbers with up to two decimal places by aligning place values (tenths, hundredths, units, tens, hundreds).
  4. Subtract decimal numbers with up to two decimal places by aligning place values and regrouping correctly.
  5. Verify their answers by performing a reverse operation (inverse check) to confirm accuracy.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

E.g.1. Use partitioning (or expanded form) and place value system to add and subtract whole and decimal numbers.
i) Add 785 and 9,342 785 = 700+80+5 + = 9000+300+40+2
9,342
10,127 = 9000+1000+120+7
ii) Add 327.6 and 54.13 300 + 20 + 7 + 6 + 0 ---
327.60 = 10 100
-
+ 54.13 = 50 + 4 + 1 + 3 10 100
381.73 = 300+ 70+ 11+ 7 + 3 10 100
iii) Subtract 7.85 from 93.6 93.60 = 90 + 3+ 6 + 0 - --- 10 100
- 7.85 = 7+ 8 + 5 10 100
85.75 = 80 + 5 + 75 ---- 100
