Learning Objectives

Indicator: B5.1.2.1.2 - Apply mental mathematics strategies for multiplication, such as annexing then adding zero halving and doubling using the distributive property

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Determine products when one factor is a multiple of 10, 100, or 1000 by annexing zeros (e.g., 3 × 200 = 600)
  2. Apply the halving and doubling strategy to find products mentally (e.g., 32 × 5 = 16 × 10 = 160)
  3. Use the distributive property to multiply by splitting one factor into parts (e.g., 6 × 18 = (6 × 10) + (6 × 8) = 108)
  4. Use the distributive property with subtraction for factors close to multiples of 10 (e.g., 29 × 7 = (30 × 7) - (1 × 7) = 203)
  5. State and apply the properties of multiplying by one and by zero
