B3 Mathematics · Term 2, Week 4

Number Operations (Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division)

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: B3.1.2.6.1 - Use concrete and pictorial representations to explain division as equal sharing or partitioning equally into given groups and finding how many are in each group

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Share a given quantity of objects equally among a stated number of groups using concrete materials (e.g. straws, counters, bottle tops) and state how many objects are in each group.
  2. Draw pictures or circles to show a quantity being partitioned equally into a given number of groups and write the division sentence.
  3. Explain in their own words that division means splitting a total into equal parts or groups.
  4. Solve simple sharing problems by using objects or drawings and justify their answers to a partner.
  5. Check whether a sharing activity was done fairly by counting to confirm each group received the same number of items.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

E.g. 1. Give a quantity of straws (e.g. 12) and invite 4 learners to share equally among themselves by picking one at a time in turns until all straws are finished and then asking each learner to count and tell the number of straws they received.
