Learning Objectives

Indicator: B1.1.2.4.2 - Solve one-step word problems involving addition and subtraction within 20 using a variety of strategies

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Read a one-step word problem involving addition or subtraction within 20 and identify what is being asked.
  2. Solve addition word problems within 20 using at least two different strategies (objects, drawings, counting on, or doubles).
  3. Solve subtraction word problems within 20 using at least two different strategies (objects, drawings, counting down, or taking apart).
  4. Explain to a partner how they solved a word problem and justify why their answer makes sense.
  5. Solve word problems with unknowns in all positions (e.g., 10 + ? = 13, 15 - ? = 8) using objects or drawings.
