Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: B8.1.1.1.4 - Express integers of any size into standard form

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Write powers of 10 for integers such as 1, 10, 100, 1000, and beyond, using index notation.
  2. Identify the key features of a number written in standard form: a number between 1 and 10, multiplied by a power of 10.
  3. Convert integers of any size, including those in the millions and billions, into standard form correctly.
  4. Convert a number given in standard form back into its ordinary integer form.
  5. Justify the choice of index (power of 10) used when expressing a given integer in standard form.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

E.g.1 Write integers as a power of 10:
(i) 1 = 10 0 10 = 10 1 100 =10 2 1000 = 10 3
E.g. 2. Write multiples of 10 in standard form: (I) 10 = 1 x 10 100 = 1x 10 1 1000 = 1x 10 3 etc.
E.g.3. Write integers in standard form:
(i) 26 = 2.6 x 10
(ii) 375 = 3.75 x 10 2
(iii) 8,765,049 = 8.765049 x 10 6
