JHS3 Mathematics · Term 1, Week 2
Number and Numeration System
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: B9.1.1.2.1 - Solve problems on relationship between members of the rational number system using knowledge and understanding of the concept of union and intersection of two sets.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Classify given numbers as natural, whole, integer, rational, or irrational numbers, stating the relationships among these sets.
- Represent the relationship between two sets from the number system using a Venn diagram.
- Find the union (A ∪ B) and intersection (A ∩ B) of two given sets drawn from the rational number system.
- Use Venn diagrams to solve problems involving classification of numbers, such as determining which numbers belong to both sets or to either set.
- Apply union and intersection of sets to solve simple real-life problems involving classification of items or people into two categories.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)
E.g. 1 Use sets diagrams to show the relationship among the Real numbers namely
-Irrational numbers (Q I ) -Rational numbers (Q) - Integers (Z) -Whole numbers (W) -Natural or Counting numbers (N) E.g. 2 Write the factors of 12 and 15 and represent them on a Venn diagram.
12={1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12} 15={1, 3, 5, 15}
