Measurement- (Perimeter and Area)
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: B4.3.3.2.2 - Select and justify referents for the units cm² or m²
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Identify the square centimetre (cm²) and square metre (m²) as the two main units for measuring area.
- State the size of a referent for 1 cm² (e.g., the nail of your thumb or a small tile) and for 1 m² (e.g., a large floor tile or a stretched bedsheet).
- Sort a given list of objects into those best measured in cm² and those best measured in m².
- Justify their choice of unit for a given object with at least one clear reason (size, convenience, number of units needed).
- Work in pairs or small groups to estimate and measure the area of at least two objects, one small and one large, using the appropriate unit.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)
E.g. 1 Let pupils explore the area of smaller objects say their exercise books. Then explore the area of larger objects say the entire classroom and compare the results for the two activities. Ask pupils to tell which unit (cm 2 or m 2 ) they will use for which activity and why?
