Measurement- Length, Capacity, Mass and Time

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: B2.3.3.3.2 - Use arbitrary units and hour on the clock to measure time to complete simple events.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Estimate the time taken for simple classroom events using arbitrary units such as claps or counting.
  2. Use a clock to measure how long simple events take, stating the time in hours or parts of an hour.
  3. Identify and describe events that take about one hour, more than one hour, or less than one hour.
  4. Compare the durations of two events using both arbitrary units and the clock as measuring tools.
  5. Record the starting and ending time of an event on a clock and state the time taken.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

E.g. 1. Ask learners to tell how much time (in terms of arbitrary unit timers like claps, water timers, etc.) it would take to
- walk round the classroom
- to sing a song
- to eat one banana
E.g. 2. Ask learners to tell describe events that take an hour or more or less than an hour.
E.g. 3. Ask learners to watch the clock each hour and note how long they stay in school each day.
