Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: B7.3.2.3.4 - Represent vector in the column (component) form (x, y) and determine its magnitude and direction.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Convert a vector given as a distance and bearing (e.g., 5 km at 030 degrees) into column vector form (x, y) using a graph.
  2. Convert a vector given as a distance and bearing into column vector form using the sine and cosine ratios without drawing a graph.
  3. Calculate the magnitude (length) of a vector given in column form using the Pythagorean theorem.
  4. Determine the direction (bearing) of a vector given in column form using the tangent ratio.
  5. Interpret column vectors in real-life situations involving movement in Ghana, such as travel between towns.

Term 3, Week 6 (Week 30 of the year)

Our suggestion, laid out in curriculum order across three terms of twelve weeks. NaCCA does not fix the week, so follow your school's scheme of learning.

Source document note

The official curriculum document has a fault in this entry, so the curriculum text above is transcribed exactly as printed:

  • indicator text - p.70: the column vector is set stacked, x above y inside one tall pair of brackets, and the flattened line interleaves the words that follow it; read 'Represent vector in the column (component) form (x, y) and determine its magnitude and direction'

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

E.g.1Write each of the following as column vectors using graph. (i) ⃗ AB =(5km,030˚), ⃗ CD =(25km,150˚)
E.g.2 Use any other method apart from graph to write the following as column vectors
(i) XY ⃗ = ( 10km, 270˚) (ii) ST ⃗ = (70km, 090˚) and find it magnitude and direction.
