SHS2 Chemistry · Semester 1, Week 6

Matter and Its Properties

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.1.1.LI.6 - Perform experiments to investigate the factors that affect the rate of reaction and analyse the data from the rate experiments.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Design and perform experiments to investigate the effect of concentration, surface area, temperature, and catalysts on the rate of reaction using appropriate apparatus.
  2. Collect quantitative data (volume of gas, loss of mass, or time for a colour change) from rate experiments and record it accurately in tables.
  3. Plot graphs of the collected data and use the graphs to deduce the relationship between each factor and the rate of reaction.
  4. Analyse experimental data to compare the rates of reaction under different conditions and draw valid conclusions about how each factor affects the rate.
  5. Discuss practical applications of the factors affecting reaction rates in everyday life in Ghana.

Matter and Its Properties (1.1)
Content standard
2.1.1.CS.1 - Demonstrate knowledge and understanding that energy changes occur in chemical reactions as a result of reorganization of atoms at different rates. 2.1.1.LO.1 Describe the different energy changes that occur as a result of reorganization of atoms. 3 Gender Equality and Social Inclusion 4 Socio-Emotional Learning 2.1.1.LO.2 Use the concept of chemical kinetics to explain that chemical reactions proceed at different rates depending on their conditions and design experiment to investigate these conditions.
Indicator
2.1.1.LI.6 - Perform experiments to investigate the factors that affect the rate of reaction and analyse the data from the rate experiments.
Suggested placement
Semester 1, Week 6 (Week 6 of the year)

Our suggestion, laid out in curriculum order across three terms of twelve weeks. NaCCA does not fix the week, so follow your school's scheme of learning.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Experiential Learning:
- In small mixed-ability groups and using circus activities, design, and perform experiments to investigate the effect of the following on rate of reaction: a. Change in concentration (using gas syringe to measure the volume of CO from HCl 2 and CaCO reaction with time). 3 b. Changes in surface area (using balance to measure loss of mass or using gas syringe to measure volume of CO produced from HCl and CaCO reaction with time). 2 3 c. Changes in temperature or concentration with respect to time (Sulphur-clock experiment). d. Catalyst (using gas syringe to measure the volume of oxygen gas produced from decomposition of H O by MnO ) 2 2 2
Talk for Learning:
- In small mixed-ability and mixed-gender groups where applicable, analyse the experimental data and graphs of reactions and deduce patterns and hence the effect of the parameters on the rate of reaction.
- Discuss practical applications of each outcome on everyday life (Example, surface area and safety of grain mill factories, why a glowing splint rekindles when it is put in a bottle of oxygen
gas, why smoking is forbidden in areas where bottled oxygen is in use, burning of charcoal, the use of antioxidants as competitive inhibitors to preserve food etc.).
