SHS2 Chemistry · Semester 1, Week 8
Matter and Its Properties
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 2.1.1.LI.8 - Construct rate equations from experimental data, analyze graphs to deduce the order of reactions and solve problems involving the rate expression.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Define rate constant, order of reaction with respect to a particular reactant, and overall order of reaction, and distinguish clearly between these terms.
- Deduce the rate expression (rate law) for a reaction from a given set of experimental data using the method of initial rates.
- Sketch and analyse concentration-time graphs to identify zero, first, and second order reactions.
- Calculate the half-life of a first order reaction and use half-life values to predict the order of a reaction.
- Solve problems involving the rate expression, including determining the rate constant with its correct units.

Collaborative Learning: - In mixed gender group where applicable, distinguish between the terms rate constant and order of reaction with respect to a particular reactant and overall order of reaction. - Brainstorm to come out with definition of rate determining step. Problem Solving Approach: - Deduce the rate expression for a reaction from experimental data. i.e., r=k[A] [B] x y - Using think-pair-share approach, sketch graphical representation for zero, first and second order reactions. - Use mathematical skills to solve problems involving the rate of reaction, including half-life of a reaction from first order and its significance as well as using half-life to predict the order of reaction. Note: Calculations involving the Arrhenius equation and its interpretations are beyond the scope of this curriculum.
