SHS2 Chemistry · Semester 1, Week 7

Matter and Its Properties

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.1.1.LI.7 - Describe the collision theory and use it to explain qualitatively, the effects of the factors that affect the rate of reaction.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. State the three main postulates of the collision theory in their own words.
  2. Explain why not every collision between reactant particles leads to a chemical reaction, using the concepts of activation energy and effective collisions.
  3. Use the collision theory to explain qualitatively how concentration, temperature, surface area, pressure, and catalysts affect the rate of a chemical reaction.
  4. Sketch and interpret the Maxwell-Boltzmann energy distribution curve to show how temperature changes and the addition of a catalyst affect the number of particles with energy equal to or greater than the activation energy.

Content standard
2.1.1.CS.1 - Demonstrate knowledge and understanding that energy changes occur in chemical reactions as a result of reorganization of atoms at different rates. 2.1.1.LO.1 Describe the different energy changes that occur as a result of reorganization of atoms. 3 Gender Equality and Social Inclusion 4 Socio-Emotional Learning 2.1.1.LO.2 Use the concept of chemical kinetics to explain that chemical reactions proceed at different rates depending on their conditions and design experiment to investigate these conditions.
