Learning Objectives
Indicator: B9.1.1.1.3 - Describe the characteristics of common acids, bases and salts.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Identify common acids, bases and salts by their observable characteristics such as taste, touch, reaction with indicators, and reaction with other substances.
- Describe the characteristic properties of acids, including their sour taste, corrosive nature, and ability to turn blue litmus paper red.
- Describe the characteristic properties of bases, including their bitter taste, slippery feel, and ability to turn red litmus paper blue.
- Describe the characteristic properties of salts, including their formation from acid-base reactions and their neutral effect on litmus paper.
- Construct a simple pH scale model using local materials and use it to classify common household substances as acidic, basic or neutral.
