Learning Objectives

Indicator: B9.1.1.1.1 - Identify by name binary chemical compounds and discuss their uses.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Define a binary chemical compound as a substance made of exactly two different elements chemically combined in fixed proportions.
  2. Identify and name at least five binary chemical compounds from a collection of everyday materials found at home, school and the community.
  3. Write the chemical symbols and correct formula for at least four binary compounds such as water (H₂O), table salt (NaCl), and marble (CaCO₃, noting it contains three elements and is therefore not binary).
  4. Discuss at least three practical uses of common binary compounds in daily Ghanaian life, such as cooking, cleaning and construction.
  5. Sort given materials into binary compounds and non-binary compounds, giving a reason for each choice.
