SHS3 Geography · Semester 1, Week 13

Maps, Their Elements and Analyses

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 3.2.1.LI.1 - Analyse natural features on maps (e.g. relief, drainage)

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify and name the major natural features (relief and drainage) shown on a topographical map using conventional symbols and colours.
  2. Describe the characteristics of relief features such as hills, valleys, ridges, escarpments and plains from contour patterns on a topographical map.
  3. Describe the characteristics of drainage features such as rivers, streams, lakes and swamps using map symbols, their direction of flow and their patterns.
  4. Analyse how relief and drainage features are interrelated, for example how river valleys shape the landscape and how slope affects river flow.
  5. Justify conclusions about the nature of the terrain and drainage of an area based on evidence drawn from map symbols, contours and spot heights.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Activity-Based Learning:
- In small groups of people from different ethnic groups, describe and analyse the natural and cultural features on a topographical map and their interrelationships.
- During class assignments and especially before tests, learners should think positively about themselves, confirming that they are prepared and have everything in their power to succeed.

Assessment (3.2.1.AS.1). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning.

Teaching and Learning Resources:
- Google Earth in 3D view (zoom to the area covered by the topographical map, so learners can see the natural and cultural features they are describing and analysing)
- Topographical map (if possible, one covering your school locality)
