SHS1 Biology · Semester 2, Week 14

Mammalian systems

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 1.4.1.LI.2 - Compare the digestive systems and associated organs of different groups of mammals.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify the major digestive organs (mouth, oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, caecum, rectum, anus, liver, pancreas) in at least three different mammals.
  2. Compare the digestive systems of carnivorous, herbivorous, and omnivorous mammals, noting at least two structural differences.
  3. Relate differences in stomach structure (e.g., simple vs. compound stomach), caecum size, and intestine length to the diet of each mammal type.
  4. Explain how the digestive adaptations of a named mammal suit its feeding habits.
  5. Work collaboratively in mixed groups to dissect a small mammal, handle instruments safely, and present findings to the class.

Mammalian systems (4.1)
Content standard
1.4.1.CS.1 - Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the morphology of mammals. 1.4.1.LO.1 Describe the morphology of mammals and relate the structures to their functions.
Indicator
1.4.1.LI.2 - Compare the digestive systems and associated organs of different groups of mammals.
Suggested placement
Semester 2, Week 14 (Week 34 of the year)

Our suggestion, laid out in curriculum order across three terms of twelve weeks. NaCCA does not fix the week, so follow your school's scheme of learning.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Task-based Learning: in randomly formed mixed-ability and gender-responsive groups, obtain three different species of small mammals and dissect them, discuss the arrangement and functions of the internal organs and tissues, and compare them with those of other mammals. By carrying out these hands-on activities learners overcome their fears and anxieties in dissection and appreciate real-life situations. Working together builds self-confidence and team spirit among learners.
Teaching and Learning Materials:
- * Three different species of the different groups of mammals (e.g., rabbit, albino rat, guinea pig, cat, etc.) * Dissecting scissors * Forceps or tweezers
- * Scalpels * Hand gloves
- Dissecting board
Assessment (1.4.1.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 3 Strategic reasoning; Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning.
