SHS2 Art And Design Foundation · Semester 2, Week 4

Making Judgements

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.2.2.LI.2 - Analyse aesthetic theories and their contexts of application

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Explain the institutional theory of art and distinguish it from aesthetic theories such as formalism and expressionism.
  2. Identify at least three contexts (e.g., museums, galleries, art schools, festival celebrations) where institutional theories of art are applied in Ghana.
  3. Compare and contrast how an artwork is judged under an aesthetic theory versus how it is judged under an institutional theory.
  4. Work in groups to investigate and present a case where institutional recognition (e.g., a national award, museum display, or festival selection) changed the status of a cultural product.
  5. Justify, with reasons, whether institutional theory alone is sufficient for judging the artistic merit of a work.
