Learning Objectives

Indicator: K1.6.2.1.3 - Tap or clap and count the syllables of the names of animals and identify the initial sound of the animal names

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Clap or tap once for each syllable in the names of common domestic and wild animals (e.g., dog = 1 clap, chicken = 2 claps, elephant = 3 claps).
  2. Count the number of claps (syllables) in an animal name and say the correct number out loud.
  3. Identify and say the initial sound of an animal name when shown a picture (e.g., cow begins with /k/, goat begins with /g/).
  4. Sort animal picture cards into groups based on the number of syllables in their names (1-syllable, 2-syllable, or 3-syllable animals).
  5. Join in a song or poem about animals, clapping the syllables of the animal names and making the correct animal sounds.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Have learners sing a song or recite a poem about and let them mimic the sound of the various animals in the song.
Play a song in the Computer/phone/CD player and ask learners to mention animals and clap the syllabus in their names and also the song.
Have learners create patterns with the syllables in selected names of domestic animals using cut out shapes or colours e.g. 1,2,1,2- dog (1), chicken (2), cat (1), puppy (2). Extend this activity with word more syllables
