JHS2 Science · Term 1, Week 4
Living Cells
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: B8.1.2.1.1 - Examine and describe the structure of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Identify the defining structural features of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells from labelled diagrams.
- Explain the function of at least three key organelles found in eukaryotic cells and state which of these are absent in prokaryotic cells.
- Compare and contrast prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells by constructing a table showing at least four similarities and four differences.
- Draw and correctly label a simple prokaryotic cell (bacterium) and a simple eukaryotic cell (plant or animal cell), using given criteria to evaluate the accuracy of their own and others’ drawings.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)
1. Compare and contrast prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. 2. Create a table to show a chart or a slideshow depicting images and labels of the types of cells. Identify their differences and similarities after observation. 3. Draw and label a prokaryotic cell and a eukaryotic cell and make a presentation on what is observed.
