Learning Objectives

Indicator: B4.1.1.2.3 - Describe the physical features of mammals, reptiles, insects and amphibians

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify the four animal groups (mammals, reptiles, insects and amphibians) by name when shown pictures or specimens.
  2. Describe the body covering, limbs and method of movement of a mammal, a reptile, an insect and an amphibian.
  3. State at least one habitat (where it lives) and one food type for each of the four animal groups.
  4. Match specific animals to their correct physical features in a matching activity using flashcards.
  5. Sort unfamiliar animals into the correct group based on their observable physical features.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

- Learners observe mammals, reptiles, insects and amphibians through videos and pictures (or relevant specimen such as frogs, lizards, cockroaches).
- Learners are guided to use think pair-share to identify and discuss the animals they have observed.
- Learners describe the physical features of the animals stated in terms of their limbs, body covering, height, shape, size, where they live, how they move and what they eat.
- Learners, in a matching activity, use flashcards to match specific animals with their identified physical features.
