Health and Safety in Engineering Practice
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 2.1.2.LI.2 - Explain the types of risk assessment.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Identify the main types of risk assessment used in engineering workplaces from a given list or scenario.
- Distinguish between qualitative, quantitative, and semi-quantitative risk assessments based on their key features.
- Explain the differences between generic, dynamic, and specific risk assessments, giving at least one example of when each would be used.
- Justify the choice of a particular risk assessment type for a given engineering scenario, based on factors such as the nature of the task, available information, and resources.
- Participate in group discussions and mind-map activities to summarise the appropriate situations for using each type of risk assessment, showing tolerance and open-mindedness toward peers’ views.

Initiating Talk for Learning: Learners research the various types of risk assessments and share them with the class. Collaborative Learning: In small, different tasks in mixed-ability groups, learners discuss when to use the various types of risk assessment and share with the class. Summarise learners' views using mind maps. Assessment (2.1.2.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall; Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding; Level 3 Strategic reasoning.
