Health and Safety in Engineering Practice

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.1.2.LI.5 - Apply the risk assessment matrix to a given risk scenario.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Recall the five elements of a risk assessment matrix (likelihood, severity, risk level, colour coding, and action priority) and state their functions (Level 1 Recall).
  2. Explain how likelihood and severity combine to determine a risk level on a 5 x 5 matrix (Level 2 Conceptual Understanding).
  3. Apply the risk assessment matrix to given risk scenarios by determining the likelihood, severity, and resulting risk level (Level 3 Strategic Reasoning).
  4. Justify the appropriate action priority for a given risk level using the matrix (Level 3 Strategic Reasoning).
  5. Work collaboratively in mixed groups to present and defend matrix-based risk assessments for local scenarios (Communication, Collaboration).

This lesson builds on the definition and relevance of risk assessment (Week 3), the types of risk assessment (Week 4), the procedure (Week 5), and control measures (Week 6). The full case-study risk assessment is scheduled for Week 8.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Initiating Talk for Learning: Learners watch videos or pictures on the risk assessment matrix and individually share their views on what it is. Guide learners to individually mention the importance of the matrix.
Through questions and answers, learners discuss the elements of the matrix and how it can be applied. Add on what learners say to fine-tune their thoughts.

Assessment (2.1.2.AS.5). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall; Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding; Level 3 Strategic reasoning.
