Learning Objectives
Indicator: 1.1.3.LI.2 - Perform floor activities in gymnastics for improving skill and health-related fitness (backward roll).
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Describe the key steps involved in performing a backward roll in the correct sequence.
- Demonstrate proper body positioning at the start and finish of a backward roll.
- Perform the backward roll with support from a partner or teacher.
- Perform the backward roll without support, showing control and balance.
- Identify at least two health or skill-related fitness components improved by practising the backward roll.

Collaborative learning/Group work: In mixed ability and mixed gender groups, let learners observe charts/pictures or watch a short video on backward roll. Practically take learners through the phases of the roll step by step. Assessment (1.1.3.AS.2): Level 2: Describe the key steps involved performing a backward roll. Level 2: Describe the proper body positioning at the start and finish of a forward roll. Level 4: Perform the backwards roll with support. Level 4: Perform the backward roll without support Teaching and Learning Resources: - Online resources - Phones/laptops - Projectors - Drums - Castanet - Clappers - Costumes for the various traditional dances - Dance rooms or studio - Sound system and speakers. - Any other equipment found in the community fit for purpose.
