By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  • Identify the operation (addition or subtraction) needed to solve a word problem involving fractions.
  • Convert mixed numbers to improper fractions and back to solve addition and subtraction problems.
  • Solve word problems involving addition or subtraction of fractions with unlike denominators.
  • Translate a real-life situation into a fraction equation and solve it.
  • Justify their answer by checking whether it is reasonable in the context of the problem.
