Indicator: B7.1.3.2.2 - Solve problems involving addition or subtraction of fractions.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Identify the operation (addition or subtraction) needed to solve a word problem involving fractions.
- Convert mixed numbers to improper fractions and back to solve addition and subtraction problems.
- Solve word problems involving addition or subtraction of fractions with unlike denominators.
- Translate a real-life situation into a fraction equation and solve it.
- Justify their answer by checking whether it is reasonable in the context of the problem.

E.g. 1. Solve word problems involving addition or subtraction of fractions. i. 3 1 feet are cut off a board that is 12 1 feet long. How long is the 3 4 remaining part of the board? ii. The Musa family decided to hike to a waterfall, approximately 8⅝ kilometres away. After an hour the lake was still 5⅓ kilometres away. How far did the group hike so far? iii. If you add 2 fractions and the sum is greater than ½, what can you say about the fractions.
