Learning Objectives
Indicator: B7.1.3.2.1 - Explain the process of addition and subtraction of two or three unlike and mixed fractions.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Identify the numerator, denominator, and whole number parts of proper, improper, and mixed fractions.
- Explain why unlike fractions must be renamed using a common denominator before adding or subtracting.
- Add two or three unlike fractions by finding the LCM of the denominators and renaming each fraction.
- Add mixed fractions by adding whole numbers separately from fractions, and express improper fraction answers as mixed numbers.
- Subtract mixed fractions using both the separate-parts method and the improper-fraction method, including cases where borrowing or regrouping is needed.

E.g. 1. To add mixed fractions, i.e. 2 2 and 1 2 , we first add the whole 5 3 numbers and then add the fractions; i.e. 2 + 1 + 2 + 2 = 3 + 6 + 10 5 3 15 15 = 3 6+10 = 3 16 = 4 1 15 15 15 E.g. 2. To subtract mixed fractions, i.e. 2 4 -1 2 , we first subtract the whole 5 3 numbers and then subtract the fractions; i.e. (2 - 1) + 4 - 2 = 1 12 -10 5 3 15 = 1 2 . 15 Alternatively, we may change the mixed fractions to improper fractions first.
