By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Partition a concrete object (such as paper, cloth, or fruit) into two and four equal parts and identify one-half and one-quarter.
  2. Identify and name the shaded part of a pictorial representation as one-half or one-quarter.
  3. Sort pictorial representations into groups of halves and one-quarters.
  4. Explain in their own words that one-half means 1 part out of 2 equal parts, and one-quarter means 1 part out of 4 equal parts.
  5. Justify their sorting decisions by explaining why a given picture shows one-half or one-quarter.
