Learning Objectives

Indicator: 3.3.3.LI.3 - Examine appropriate methods of waste management in Ghana: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle (3Rs)

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  • Define the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) and give at least two local examples of each from their own communities.
  • Explain the difference between reducing, reusing and recycling, using concrete waste items commonly found in Ghanaian homes.
  • Assess the effectiveness of the 3Rs in managing waste in their school and community, giving reasons for their judgments.
  • Create a useful artefact from plastic or other waste materials and explain which of the 3Rs the activity represents.
  • Justify the role of individuals, households and institutions in applying the 3Rs to reduce environmental degradation in Ghana.

- Listen to a presentation by a resource person on ways of managing waste.
- Classify the various ways of managing waste under the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle).
Project-based Learning:
- In groups use plastic or other waste products as the raw material to create any useful artefact.
- Learners should be conscious of resolving interpersonal conflicts with each other if they arise in group. discussions
