Learning Objectives
Indicator: B9.4.1.2.4 - Demonstrate the formation of an eclipse.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Define solar eclipse and lunar eclipse in their own words, correctly identifying which celestial body is obscured in each case.
- Build a working model using everyday materials to demonstrate how a solar eclipse forms when the Moon comes between the Sun and the Earth.
- Use the same model to show how a lunar eclipse forms when the Earth comes between the Sun and the Moon.
- Explain, using their model, why an eclipse does not happen every month even though the Moon orbits the Earth monthly.
- State the safety rule that the Sun must never be viewed directly during a solar eclipse, and explain why it is dangerous to do so.
