SHS1 Agricultural Science · Semester 1, Week 9
Emerging Technologies in Agriculture.
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 1.1.2.LI.2 - Describe the use and importance of tissue culture in vegetable crop and ornamental plant enterprises.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Define tissue culture in their own words and state at least three steps involved in the process.
- Describe at least four uses of tissue culture in vegetable crop production, such as producing disease-free planting materials and multiplying rare varieties.
- Explain at least five importance of tissue culture to ornamental plant enterprises, including rapid multiplication and preservation of prized hybrids.
- Compare tissue culture with traditional methods of propagation (seeds, cuttings) for vegetables and ornamentals, citing at least two advantages and one limitation of tissue culture.
- Present a group poster showing the benefits of tissue culture, using correct agricultural terminology.
This lesson builds on Week 5 where learners explained emerging technologies, and Week 8 where they grew crops using known procedures. The focus here is specifically on tissue culture as one such technology. The technology of drones and other emerging tools will be treated in Week 10, so do not cover them in this lesson.

Talk for Learning: Learners in mixed-ability and mixed-gender groups brainstorm the meaning and importance of tissue culture in the cultivation of vegetable crops and ornamental plants. Collaborative Learning: Task learners in mixed-gender groups (of 4) to research and come up with the importance of tissue culture in vegetable crop and ornamental plant production. Activity-Based Learning: Learners discuss the benefits of using tissue culture and present their findings on cardboard posters and paste them on the walls. Teaching and Learning Resources: - Parks and Gardens - Vegetable farms - Reading materials - Functional Internet facility - Laptop computer - Wi-Fi - Seeds of selected vegetables - Ornamental plants - Containers for planting - Water - Field notebook - Pens - Functional Internet facility - Video documentaries on tissue culture - Smartphones - Recorded videos on other emerging technologies - LCD projector - Internet facility Assessment (1.1.2.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall; Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding.
