B5 Science · Term 3, Week 2
Electricity and Electronics
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: B5.4.2.1.1 - Identify the components of an electric circuit and their functions
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- define an electric circuit in their own words as a closed path through which electric current flows.
- identify the four basic components of a simple electric circuit: a source (dry cell), connecting wires, a load (bulb or LED) and a switch.
- state the function of each component: the dry cell supplies energy, wires carry current, the bulb converts electrical energy to light, and the switch opens or closes the circuit.
- construct a working simple circuit using a dry cell, connecting wire and a bulb or LED, and explain why the bulb lights up when the circuit is closed.
- suggest alternative materials that can perform the same functions as a dry cell, connecting wires and a bulb in a circuit.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)
- Begin by asking learners what comes into their minds when they hear the term, 'electric circuit' - Learners watch pictures and videos of simple electrical circuits and how they work. - Learners, in groups, construct simple electric circuits using connecting wire, dry cells and a bulb/LED to light up the bulb. - Assist learners to identify the components and their uses. - Learners find out other materials that can be used in place of dry cells, connecting wires and bulb. Project: Learners build an LED lantern using the above circuit and plastic bottle.
