JHS2 Science · Term 2, Week 3
Ecosystem
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: B8.3.3.1.1
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Explain what life on Earth would be like without the sun, using evidence from their own observations.
- Define the terms producer, primary consumer, secondary consumer, food chain and food web in their own words.
- Construct a simple food chain showing at least three trophic levels, with arrows correctly indicating the direction of energy flow.
- Trace the flow of energy from the sun through a food chain and explain what happens to the energy at each step.
- Distinguish between a food chain and a food web using examples from a Ghanaian ecosystem they are familiar with.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)
1. Discuss how life on earth will be like without the sun. 2. Explain the terms: producer, primary consumer, secondary consumer, food chain and food web as applied in energy transfer in an ecosystem. 3. Illustrate with diagrams how energy from the sun flows through a food chain and food web in an ecosystem.
