Ecosystem

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: B3.3.3.1.1 - Identify organisms in a habitat and describe why they live in a particular place

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify at least five different organisms found in the school environment or a familiar habitat and name the habitat where each is found.
  2. Describe at least two observable features of an organism that help it to live successfully in its habitat (e.g., fins of a fish, wings of a bird).
  3. Explain in simple terms why a particular organism lives in a specific place and not elsewhere.
  4. Classify organisms according to the habitat in which they are found (e.g., water habitat, land habitat, tree habitat).
  5. Create a simple poster showing organisms in their natural homes with labels.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

- Show pictures, videos and drawings of organisms in their various homes (habitats).
- Take learners on a field trip (or a tour of the school environment) to study about some ecosystems, e. g. (1) Birds and insects on a tree (2) Frogs and fish in a pond/stream (3) Grasshoppers, insects on a grass field (4) Different plant on a farm.
- Assist learners to identify some observable features that enable organisms to live successfully in their habitat e.g. tilapia has fins to help it swim in a pond. Birds have wings to help them.
- Guide learners to discuss the following: (1) is a frog a fish? (2) Why can't a fish live on land?
- Learners plan, design and draw posters showing organisms in their natural homes.
