Learning Objectives

Indicator: B4.2.1.2.1 - Identify the objects in the sky during day and night

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Name at least three objects visible in the daytime sky and at least four objects visible in the night time sky.
  2. Compare the day sky and night sky by identifying at least two differences and one similarity.
  3. Draw a Venn diagram showing which objects appear only in the day sky, only in the night sky, and in both.
  4. Explain, in simple terms, what happens to the sky in a 24-hour cycle.
  5. State the importance of at least one object they see in the sky (for example, the sun or the moon).

This lesson connects to the earlier work on cyclic movements in the environment (B4.2.1.1.1), where learners noticed how day and night repeat in a pattern. It stops short of the water cycle content scheduled for later weeks.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

- Ask learners to step outside the classroom and: (a) name the objects in the daytime sky; (b) identify the objects in the night time sky; (c) identify the differences and similarities in day and night sky, (d). answer the question: what happens to the sky in a 24-hour cycle?
- Learners draw Venn diagrams (2 circles then another circle overlapping the two) and put in them the things they see in the night sky, day sky and then in both skies and display their work on the classroom walls.
- Learners write about the importance of the things they see in the skies.
