Indicator: B5.5.2.1.2 - Identify causes, symptoms and prevention of cholera

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. State at least three causes of cholera from everyday scenarios discussed in class.
  2. List at least four symptoms of cholera and match each symptom to its description.
  3. Explain at least four ways to prevent cholera, using actions they can take at home and school.
  4. Analyse a given scenario and identify whether it shows a cause, symptom or prevention of cholera.
  5. Work collaboratively in groups to generate and present ideas on cholera causes, symptoms and prevention on a class cardboard display.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

- Learners watch pictures and videos or images showing the causes, symptoms and prevention of cholera.
- Invite a local health officer or SHEP coordinator to give a presentation on cholera to the learners.
- Engage learners, in groups, to discuss the causes of cholera, using everyday scenarios, e.g. eating contaminated food and living in a dirty environment.
- Learners are provided one large cardboard for all the groups to write different ideas on the causes, prevention and symptoms of cholera.
- Learners display the cardboard in the classroom.
