Learning Objectives
Indicator: B8.5.2.1.7 - Demonstrate basic skills in cutting out designs without patterns in SEWING
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Define free-hand cutting technique and explain why it is useful for sewing garments without commercial patterns.
- Take accurate body measurements (chest, hip, and length) for a simple blouse or shirt, following the rule that boys measure boys and girls measure girls.
- Fold fabric correctly with right sides facing each other and mark out a blouse/shirt directly on the fabric using body measurements.
- Cut out a simple blouse/shirt design using paper for practice, following a step-by-step free-hand method.
- Display and appraise their cut-out work, giving reasons for the choices they made and evaluating the success of their final product.

1. Explain what is meant by free-hand cutting technique. E.g., It is a technique of using an individual's body measurements to cut garments/articles directly on fabric without patterns. 2. Apply the free-hand cutting technique in cutting out a simple blouse/ shirt. E.g. - Cut required size of fabric based on the measurements taken. Note: Consider chest and hip measurements - Fold fabric into two with right sides facing each other - Measure the length of blouse and continue. 3. Cut out shirt/blouse using paper for practice 4. Display cut out papers (shirt/blouse) for appraisal. Note: Boys to measure boys, and girls to measure girls.
