Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.1.2.LI.2 - Analyse social and material conditions that produced designs and products.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Explain what the terms “social conditions” and “material conditions” mean in the context of 20th Century design history.
  2. Identify at least three social conditions (such as war, urbanisation, politics, gender roles) that shaped the products of De Stijl, Constructivism, Bauhaus, Art Deco and Postmodern Design.
  3. Identify at least three material conditions (such as new industrial materials, scarcity, mass production technology) that influenced what these design schools produced.
  4. Analyse, in groups, how a specific design product from a 20th Century design school reflects its social and material conditions, using a given framework or guiding questions.
  5. Create a manual visual diary entry or annotated photograph that demonstrates the link between a local Ghanaian product and the social and material conditions that produced it, drawing parallels to 20th Century concepts.
