Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.1.2.LI.1 - Categorise and discuss major modern design concepts, theories, and schools.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Define modern design schools and identify at least three historical conditions that gave rise to them, including the Western Industrial Revolution and Art Nouveau.
  2. Categorise the six major 20th Century design schools (Art Nouveau, De Stijl and Constructivism, Bauhaus, International Style, Art Deco, Postmodern Design) according to their time periods, origins, and key design principles.
  3. Explain the core philosophy of each design school in one or two sentences, using accurate terminology.
  4. Compare and contrast two design schools, identifying at least one similarity and one difference in their concepts or approaches.
  5. Produce a timeline infographic that correctly sequences the 20th Century design schools and includes at least one visual example and one key concept for each school.
