SHS3 Aviation And Aerospace Engineering · Semester 2, Week 12

Design and Fabrication of UAVs

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 3.4.3.LI.1 - Generate UAV concepts given a set of mission requirements.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify and list the key components of a mission requirement statement (flight duration, range, payload, environment, and operational purpose).
  2. Sketch at least three distinct UAV concepts that respond to a given set of mission requirements.
  3. Explain, in writing, how each sketch satisfies or falls short of each stated requirement.
  4. Compare and contrast two or more UAV configurations (e.g., fixed-wing, multirotor, hybrid) in terms of their trade-offs for a specific mission.
  5. Work in mixed-ability teams to present and defend a generated concept with respect for the views and contributions of all group members.

Talk-for Learning: Through question and answer sessions, learners discuss a set of requirements and the process of designing and building a UAV that satisfies the requirements.
Teaching and Learning Resources:
- Sample concept evaluation tables and decision matrices
Assessment (3.4.3.AS.1). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning.
